How do you calculate a diesel surcharge?
- There is no single universal fuel-surcharge formula: carriers and forwarders use their own contractual index tables or formulas. Before applying a result, verify the base diesel price, index and adjustment period agreed in the customer contract.
- The “fuel share of tariff” mode calculates the percentage change in diesel price from the base and applies it only to the fuel share you specify in the base tariff. For example, if fuel is 30% of the tariff, a 10% diesel-price change produces a 3% tariff adjustment.
- The “actual fuel” mode compensates the direct price difference: total trip litres × (current price − base price). It is practical for an FTL trip when total kilometres and actual consumption are known.
- The “contract step” mode is for agreements where every specified €/L movement changes the surcharge by a defined number of percentage points. Enter step values only from your own contract.
Important: EuroTruckTools’ automatic current diesel price is an indicative price for the selected country from the fuel module. The base price must be the reference agreed in your contract. If the base freight rate has already been updated for current fuel, an additional fuel surcharge can double-count the fuel cost.
