Fuel surcharge formulas are contract-specific

There is no single universal U.S. fuel-surcharge formula. The base diesel price, index, fuel share and adjustment period must match the contract.
The actual-fuel method uses trip gallons × (current $/gal − base $/gal).
A step model should use only the increment and percentage-point rules written into the customer or carrier agreement.

Important: EIA weekly on-highway diesel prices are commonly used as an index reference, but your contract must specify the actual index and calculation method.
