Hauliers planning the Brenner corridor on Saturday 3 October 2026 face two connected but different restrictions. Germany's Day of German Unity ban runs nationwide from 00:00 to 22:00. On the same date Austria has a special restriction on the A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner motorways from 00:00 to 15:00 for traffic whose destination is Germany or a country reached via Germany.
Germany: nationwide ban until 22:00
Under section 30 of the German Road Traffic Regulations, commercial or paid carriage of goods is prohibited on Sundays and statutory holidays from midnight to 22:00 for trucks over 7.5 tonnes permissible maximum weight and for trucks towing trailers. Empty journeys connected with such transport are included. The Day of German Unity on 3 October is one of the holidays for which the ban applies across the whole federal territory.
Therefore, a vehicle released on the Austrian side after 15:00 is not automatically free to continue a commercial goods movement in Germany. Unless a statutory exemption applies to that particular operation, the German restriction remains in place until 22:00.
Austria: A12 and A13 restriction until 15:00
Austria's official 2026 calendar restricts the A12 Inntal and A13 Brenner motorways on 3 October from 00:00 to 15:00 when the journey's destination is Germany or a country that is reached through Germany. The destination test matters: it is not determined simply by the truck's country of registration.
15:00 should not be treated as a universal green light. As 3 October 2026 is a Saturday, Austria's general weekend restrictions and their vehicle criteria may also be relevant after the special morning window. Check the vehicle weight, trailer, cargo, precise itinerary and any exemption before dispatch.
Planning a northbound trip
- Do not time the German border only around Austria's 15:00 end time; the German holiday ban continues until 22:00.
- Reserve a legal and safe parking strategy in advance. Parking close to Kufstein and the Brenner corridor may fill before the restriction.
- Combine the ban window with EU driving and rest-time limits. Waiting for a ban to end does not remove tachograph obligations.
- Check the commercial nature and final destination of the journey. Transit through Germany can bring the trip within Austria's A12/A13 destination condition.
- Rely on an exemption only when the operation meets its exact conditions and the driver carries supporting documents. General urgency is not an exemption by itself.
Practical example
A loaded truck travels from Italy to the Netherlands via the Brenner on Saturday morning. Because the Netherlands is normally reached through Germany, the Austrian special A12/A13 restriction may affect it until 15:00. Yet even after that time, the nationwide German holiday ban continues until 22:00. Dispatch must plan the route as one corridor, not as two unrelated border crossings.
