Under France's standing mountain-zone rules, the winter-equipment period runs every year from 1 November to 31 March. Operators should therefore prepare for the 2026/27 season from 1 November 2026. The rule applies in areas selected by prefects and marked by signs in the Alps, Pyrenees, Jura, Vosges and Massif Central.
Rigid truck without a trailer
Coaches and heavy goods vehicles without a trailer or semi-trailer may use approved winter tyres or carry removable anti-skid devices suitable for at least two driven wheels.
Only tyres with the 3PMSF symbol are treated as equivalent to removable anti-skid equipment. M+S tyres may still be used, but chains or another accepted removable device must then also be carried.
Truck with a trailer or semi-trailer
The rule is stricter for combinations: removable anti-skid devices for at least two driven wheels must be carried even when the tractor has 3PMSF winter tyres. This distinction is particularly important for international hauliers.
Where does it apply?
France does not impose one nationwide winter-tyre rule. Prefectural orders define municipalities in 34 mountain departments, and road signs mark the entry and exit of enforceable zones. Check the 2026/27 municipality list before dispatch because local coverage may change.
Haulier checklist
Check whether the route enters a signed zone; distinguish a rigid vehicle from a combination; verify 3PMSF markings; carry correctly sized devices for two driven wheels; allow time for fitting and mountain disruption.
