CARGO
U.S. axle weight calculator
Estimate steer, drive-tandem and trailer-tandem loads in pounds from cargo position and check federal Interstate references.
⚠️ Important
Planning aid only. Always verify state and federal rules, permits, vehicle/tire ratings, route restrictions, carrier tariffs and certified scale weights when they apply.
How the U.S. axle-weight check works
- The physics model starts from your actual empty coupled axle-group weights and adds cargo according to the cargo center-of-gravity position.
- The federal Interstate reference uses 20,000 lb for a single axle, 34,000 lb for a tandem axle group and 80,000 lb gross, subject to Federal Bridge Formula.
- The Bridge Formula can produce a lower maximum based on axle count and the distance between the outer axles of the group. State, permit, tire and GAWR limits may also be more restrictive.
Important: FHWA / 23 CFR 658 federal values are planning references for Interstate operation; always verify the actual state, route, permit and vehicle configuration.
